This is a review of the new Luvs Pro Level diapers. We will look into what has changed with the brand and see how the updated version holds up to other manufacturers. They are available in sizes 1 through 6 and today we purchased a bag of 26 for $4.97 at our local Walmart. Luvs are known as one of the more affordable brands. With the new Pro Level name, we found they cost the same as the previous Triple Leakguards at just 19 cents per diaper. They are available in larger quantities such as 104, 168, 198, and 336 for size three. Buying in bulk can save you about 26 percent, dropping the price per change to just 15 cents.
Looking at the new outer shell, we find two designs per bag. Both feature a primarily purple design of either dots or stripes on a white background. The new design features phrases like "The Snuggle Is Real" and "Crib Hair Don't Care” printed on the back. Like previous generations of Luvs, the brand name is printed all over the outer cover. One of the changes from the old design is how they indicate front and back. The old design had a large printed word "Back" on the rear waistline. It was harder to see as the lettering was dark purple with a light purple background. The new design now features only the word "Front" located under the tape landing zone. It’s much easier to see as it is bold white lettering on a dark purple background. Above it, you will find the side indicator centered on the tape landing zone. We like the highly visible yellow wetness indicator that changes color to blue when moisture is detected. We found it very easy to see when a change is needed in a low-light room.
The rear waistline does not have any stretch like many other brands. Instead, Luvs have very flexible and stretchable rear wings. The wings are also much longer and taller than other brands. When stretched tab to tab we measured 14.5 inches which is average for a size 3 diaper. The sticky tabs are positioned much lower than other brands on the rear wings. They are much shorter but do an excellent job at sticking to the tape landing zone. They also do a good job at sticking to the outer shell but do not stick well to the front wings like most brands.
The inner absorbent layer is very soft to the touch and unlike all other brands, it is blue in color!! The padding itself is very thin at just 3.6 millimeters or about 0.14 of an inch. Although this is a very thin diaper, it has amazing absorbency performance when compared to other brands. It was able to absorb the first 50 ml in just 8 seconds while spreading the moisture across 60 percent of the absorbent padding. This absorbency speed is due to the "triple leakguards" that wick moisture across the padding versus allowing moisture to pool in one place. The second 50 ml was absorbed under the top sheet 80 percent faster than other brands on average! Not only did it absorb moisture fast, but the top sheet also remained very dry with a measurement of only 16.7% after 120 seconds. This is one of the most important measurements since dry skin equals a healthy skin, healthy skin equals a happy baby, a happy baby equals very happy parents!
Overall total absorbency is average at 702 grams but this may be due to the much smaller than average padding at only 10.75 inches in length. We really like the extra tall 1.75 inch leg gathers. They do a great job of keeping a mess where it needs to be but are much shorter in length than any other brand at just 9 inches.
This is a strongly scented product. It has a pleasant baby powder fragrance to it that does a great job at odor control. If you are worried about the fragrance, you can easily smell it through the bag before purchasing. This is the only diaper to have clever phrases printed on the outer shell, as well as a blue inner padding.
One of the best performing diapers in terms of dryness and ability to absorb moisture and lock it away. Super stretchy rear wings. Very affordable! We both liked the phrases on the back and the easy to read wetness indicator.
With the exception of the outer shell design, this is the same diaper as the Luvs Triple Leakguards. It still has one of the shortest absorbent pads and no stretch to the rear waistline.
