Today we are reviewing The Honest Company diaper in size three. Honest diapers are available in sizes newborn through size six and are available in packs of 27, 68, and 136 for size three. These are currently the most expensive tested to date. We purchased a bag of 27 for $10.99, which brings the cost per unit to 41 cents when purchasing the smallest quantity available. When purchasing in bulk, you can save by buying the club box of 136, bringing the cost down to 37 cents per diaper. Even at 37 cents, this is still pricier than any other brand tested to date, but with the added expense, you are purchasing from the only major manufacturer that produces Eco-Friendly diapers. We feel that the cost is also justified as they use only sustainably harvested fluff pulp and plant-derived materials. They are also hypoallergenic and completely free of chlorine processing, latex, fragrances, and lotions, making this a very good choice for both the environment and your baby’s sensitive skin.
One of our favorite parts of Honest diapers are the outer patterns that are available. They have giraffes, feathers, dinosaurs, trains, skull and cross bones, and my favorite, a space theme with rockets and astronauts. For our purchase, the outer print features a breathable back sheet with cute panda faces on a grey background. The Honest Company is one of the few brands that do not indicate the front and back, nor do they have size information on the outside of the product. They are also unique in that they do not have a wetness indicator as the ingredients used to indicate wetness violates The Honest Company’s standards in keeping the diaper Eco-Friendly.
We like that the rear waistband is very stretchable, and the rear wings are large and have about one inch of stretch to them. The front wings are small, and we feel that they are primarily used to help align the diaper. The sticky tabs are large and have excellent performance when sticking them to the front tape landing zone. The sticky tabs also stick very well to the outer shell of the diaper due to the soft hook and loop texture of the tab.
The inner lining of the Honest diaper is simple, without any texture, patterns, or colors on it. We like that it runs all the way to one inch of the front of the diaper and stops at 2.75 inches from the back waistline. It is the thickest diaper tested to date at just under a quarter-inch thick, which equates to about 25 percent thicker than other brands on average. Although thick, the total absorbency scores average numbers absorbing 30.27 ounces under pressure which is much better than the 17x advertised on the bag. After our tests, we found that it can hold about 30 times its weight under pressure. The absorbency performance for the 50ml test was average, taking 13.8 seconds to absorb 50ml below the top sheet. The additional 50ml test took much longer to absorb moisture below the top sheet taking 43 seconds.
Additionally, the top sheet remained noticeably damp in our 120-second test scoring one of the wettest results measured to date. For this reason, it is recommended that you frequently monitor your child for any soiling so a rash does not result. It is worth mentioning that we test all diapers four times and average our results, so this poor result was duplicated over and over. The standing leg gathers are right on par with most others on the market at 1.5 inches tall and are average in length at 10 inches.
Unique features about this brand are all the different patterns that are available today. We really liked having several options when it came to styling. The Honest Co is one of the few brands that feature a materials list printed on the side of the bag to let you know exactly what you are purchasing. These are designed in California but made in Mexico.
As mentioned earlier, we really liked all the different available designs! These diapers are also Eco-Friendly using sustainably harvested fluff pulp and plant-derived materials. They are gentle against the skin as they are hypoallergenic, free of chlorine, latex, fragrances, and lotions.
The most expensive diapers tested to date. This diaper is the thickest tested to date and did not score well in keeping the top sheet dry after our 120-second test. No outer wetness indicator.
